Pet Friendly Motorhome Hire

Travelling in a motorhome is the perfect way to get back in touch with nature, explore the world around you and enjoy quality time with those you love most.

For many of us, however, the ones we love the most aren't only our human companions but our pets.

It’s for this reason that Struans Leisure offers a range of pet friendly motorhomes for hire to our customers in Scotland.

We want to help make sure that your motorhome rental holiday is as fun and enjoyable as possible, and with a pet friendly from Struans you can be sure that you and your pet can travel together safely and legally, in the Scottish Highlands or wherever you might end up!

Dog friendly motorhome and campervan hire in Scotland

It’s no secret that humans and dogs have a close bond. For many of us, our dogs stay by our side night and day, and the idea of a holiday without our four-legged friend just doesn't feel right.

But when travelling abroad or staying in a hotel or B&B, it’s not always possible to bring your dog along with you. In fact, it’s often impossible to do all the things you have planned with a loyal pup by your side. This leaves dog owners with a hard decision; go on holiday without your dog, leaving him or her in a kennel or with a friend, or don’t go on holiday at all.

We feel neither of these options is particularly attractive.

Therefore, we’ve made sure to include a variety of pet friendly motorhomes and campervans within our motorhome hire stock to give dog owners the option of an incredible holiday where their dog can come along and join in the fun.

We feel a motorhome rental holiday is the perfect type of holiday to have a dog (or other pet) along for the ride due to the fresh air, nature and long walks that you will inevitably experience.

We offer dog friendly motorhome hires in Scotland in the following sizes:

  • More space and better ventilation make living in a motorhome more comfortable for your dog compared to being cooped up in a car

Top tips for travelling with your pet in a motorhome or campervan

Although travelling in a motorhome with your pet is great fun and can be a very rewarding experience, it’s important to take the proper steps to ensure your pet is safe, cool and well hydrated at all times.

Below are some of our top tips for travelling in a campervan or motorhome hire with your dog (or other pet):

  • Don’t keep your dog or pet trapped in your motorhome hire unattended, especially on a hot day!
  • Bring along your pets usual bed, blanket or toy to help them settle in and feel more comfortable in your pet friendly motorhome or campervan hire
  • Ensure a secure set up for your dog or pet whilst the motorhome is in transition. We recommend building a sheltered bed (maybe under the dining table) or using a seat belt harness to keep your dog from distracting you whilst driving.
  • When feeding your pet try to do so well in advance of a long drive as this will help prevent them from feeling nauseous whilst on the road
  • Don’t leave bowls of food and water sitting out in your motorhome whilst you drive, it will only cause a mess!
  • Use stops to give your dog or pet a toilet break, some water and a chance to stretch their little legs. If you’re feeling uncomfortable during a long drive, there’s a good chance your pet is too.
  • Keep the motorhome well ventilated and use the protective blinds to help keep the inside of the motorhome as cool as possible if the weather is particularly hot and sunny
  • Always have a supply of treats, pet food and cool water ready for your pet at all times.

Looking after your pet or dog whilst travelling in a pet friendly motorhome hire simply requires you to follow common sense rules of looking after a pet.

As long as you remain vigilant and act as the responsible pet owner that you do throughout the year, your dog or other pet will have a fantastic time whilst travelling across Scotland in a pet friendly motorhome hire from Struans.

What the law says on having pets and dogs in motorhomes

If you only plan to travel in Scotland, England or Wales during your motorhome rental holiday, then the law you need to abide by is the same rule for cars. In the Highway Code, rule 57 states that:

“When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals”

Really, this is basic common sense. However, it’s important to be aware of this rule not just so you are in line with the law but also so that both you, your passengers and your pet all remain safe whilst travelling in a pet friendly motorhome.

Where do you put your dog in a campervan?

When traveling in a campervan with your dog, it's essential to keep them safe and comfortable during your adventure. While there isn't a designated spot for dogs in a campervan, there are several options to consider:

  1. Secured crates: A crate is a great way to keep your pets safe during travel, especially if you have smaller dogs. It can provide a safe and familiar space for them to relax during the journey. Make sure the crate is properly secured to prevent it from shifting during travel.
  2. Seat belts or harnesses: Larger dogs can be secured using seat belts or harnesses attached to the campervan's seating areas. This allows them to see the highlands while safely enjoying the journey in a comfortable seat. Ensure that the seat belt is properly wrapped around your dog’s chest to keep them secure.
  3. Vehicle dog cages: This option is ideal if you are looking for a more heavy-duty solution and have the space to accommodate it. Especially if you own a large dog, vehicle dog cages are the best option to secure them while providing them a space to relax while travelling.

Can dogs travel in the back of a campervan?

While dogs can technically travel in the back of a campervan, it's important to consider their safety and well-being. Here are some tips for that you can do so they can stay safe and comfortable during your travel:

  1. Ventilation: Make sure that there is adequate ventilation in the back of the campervan to keep your dog cool and comfortable. Consider opening windows or using fans to improve airflow to allow them to breathe properly.
  2. Securing: Use a harness, crate, or vehicle cage to secure your dog in place and prevent them from moving around while the vehicle is in motion. This helps to minimise the risk of injury in the event of sudden stops or turns.
  3. Comfort: Provide your dog with a comfortable bed or mat to lie on during the journey. Avoid leaving them in the back of the campervan for extended periods and take regular breaks to allow them to stretch their legs and relieve themselves.

Is the North Coast 500 dog friendly?

The North Coast 500 (NC500) is a scenic driving route where you can enjoy rugged landscapes of the Scottish Highlands right from your window. While the route itself is dog-friendly, it's essential to plan ahead and consider your furry friend's needs:

  1. Accommodation: Many hotels, guesthouses, and campsites along the NC500 welcome pets. However, it's always best to check in beforehand to ensure that your chosen accommodation is dog-friendly.
  2. Activities: There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy along the NC500, from hiking and beach walks to exploring historic sites and scenic viewpoints. Just be mindful of any restrictions or regulations regarding dogs in certain areas.
  3. Pet etiquette: Remember to always clean up after your dog and keep them on a leash in public areas. Respect any signs or guidelines regarding pets and be considerate of other travelers and wildlife.
