If you've never hire a campervan or motorhome from us you're bound to have loads of questions and below are some of the most commonly asked ones.
If there's anything you can't find please get in touch with our team on 01738 606360 or rental@struans.com - our friendly team is here to help and we believe there's no such thing as a silly question!
Please also check out the Driver Requirements that are found at the top of our Terms & Conditions page.
Are there any extras? We offer inclusive rates and you do not need to pay any more than that and a refundabe security deposit equivalent to your insurance excess. Our vehicles also comes with a full bottle of gas and spare toilet fluid. There are some options though which are shown on the Rates page and the most common ones are to reduce your insurance excess from £1500 to £250, additional drivers or for bedding packs (sheets, duvet, pillows and towels).
When do i need to pay? We take a 25% deposit when booking to secure a vehicle then the balance roughly 6 weeks before the start of your holiday. If your collection is under 6 weeks away then the full amount in required when booking. Then on the day there is a security deposit equivalent to the insurance excess.
Do I need to pay anything when I collect the motorhome? Yes there is a refundable security deposit to be paid by card when collecting the motorhome to cover any damage and is equivalent to the insurance excess. The standard deposit is £1,500 but if you have chosen the £20 per day Excess Reduction option then your excess and deposit come down to £250 for the first claim. We normally process the refund either when you are returning the vehicle or within a day but it can take another few days for it to show in your account.
Is there a mileage charge? Our motorhomes come with an allowance of 150 miles per day with excess charged at 15p per mile. Rarely do customers go over this mileage and we would not charge if you were just slightly over. If your are spending a week touring Scotland most people typically do 700-800 miles.
How much fuel will I use? We can never guarantee a certain fuel economy as it varies with the weight of vehicle, driving style and roads you are driving on but whenever we check the trip computers they tend to be around the 29 - 31mpg range (9.74 - 911l/km) for motorhomes and campervans are a bit more economical. All our vehicles are diesel.
How do i pay for my booking? We accept payments through bank transfer or debit /credit cards (excluding American Express and Diners' Club). For international customers, we can take payments using Wise (previously called Transferwise), which normally has a better exchange rate and lower charges than banks.
Can I request a specific model? At the time of booking we allocate you to a specific vehicle with a layout to suit your requirements. However we cannot guarantee 100% that this is the vehicle you are supplied with as occasionally due to unforseen circumstances such as vehicle accidents we need to move vehicles around but you will always be supplied with a vehicle of at least the same number of berths.
What if I need to cancel my booking? Please immediately inform us in writing if you decide to cancel your booking with us. If we receive the notification more than six weeks before the start of your rental, you will be refunded in full (less an administration fee of £100).
On the contrary, if we receive the notification less than six weeks before the start of rental, all payments made are non-refundable and you will still be liable for any amount due.
However, if we are able to re-hire rehire the motorhome you cancelled, you will be able to refund up to the maximum cost of your total hire (less an administration fee of £250). The total amount will depend on the price we rehire the motorhome for.
Have a look at our Rates page where any optional extras are listed.
Can I view your motorhomes and campervans? Yes no problem at all. We just ask you contact us first to make an appointment just to be sure that a member of our team will be available to show you sound the vehicles and to check that we will have any models you want to see on site.
Can I leave my car parked on your site? Absolutely! We have parking space for you to leave your car or van while you're away in one of our leisure vehicles. We have a large site which also has some of our car dealerships and over 200 cars so there is 24 hour CCTV, but please note we do not take responsibility for any vehicles left with us.
Do I need a special licence? No - our motorhomes are under 3500kg so as long as you can drive a manual car you can drive one of our motorhomes. You just need to be aged 25 - 75 and held your full licence over 2 years. Please also check our Driver Requirements which can be found on the Terms and Conditions page.
Are the vehicles fully insured? Yes all our prices include comprehensive insurance for a driver aged 25 - 75. You need to have passed your test at least 2 years ago and we need to know about any points/convictions on your licence as there are some restrictions that could affect our ability to provide insurance. You are liable for a maximum £1500 damage to our motorhome per accident damage but you can reduce this down to £250 on the first claim by paying an extra £20 per day.
What do i need to bring with me when collecting? All drivers must be present and show their driving licence. Drivers from the UK must also bring:
Drivers from other countries must also show their passport or ID card.
When collecting your motorhome you need to pay a refundable security deposit equivalent to the insurance excess you have chosen (£1000 or £250)
Do I need to stay at a campsite? When you don't stay overnight at a camp site the term most people tend to call this is wild camping (although that term actully that just applies to people camping in tents). Our motorhomes and campervans are designed to be either be hooked up at campsites or off-site. It is vital when camping off site that you respect your surroundings and local inhabitants. Please see our Blog about off-site camping for more information.
Can I take pets? Yes but we have specific vehicles are pet friendly due to allergy reasons and you must let us know at the time of booking so we can allocate the correct motorhome. There is a £50 surcharge for pet friendly vehicles to cover increased cleaning and greater wear and tear.
Can I take bikes? Yes our vehicles have either bike racks or garages to store bikes. Please advise us at the time if you will be taking bikes. Please note the bike racks have a 50kg limit and we may weigh your bikes to make sure they fit under this limit.
We always recommend that you carry an allen key with you incase the handlebars need adjusted to fit.
We do not rent bikes but if you are looking for one we would suggest contacting the Bike Station in Perth https://thebikestation.org.uk/ . This is a charity that sells reconditioned bikes which is often a cheaper option than renting. At the end of the hire you can donate the bike back to them.
Can you deliver? Afraid not. All vehicles need to be collected from our site where the paperwork is processed. However we do offer a chargeable service to collect you and bring you to our office and return you at the end. This is particularly popular for people coming into airports such as Edinburgh.
How long does it take when collecting? This can vary a lot. Although the paperwork only takes 5 minutes we will spend as long as it takes going over the operation of the motorhome until you are happy, but typically it is best to allow 45min to an hour.
If you are wanting to get away as fast as possible and able to come into our office before the collection day then we could try and organise an advance handover. This is subject to staff availability and a motorhome of the correct model being on site but would mean we just needed to do the paperwork and a damage inspection before you drive off.
What time do I collect and return? Our standard collection time is 2pm, with the latest being 4pm, and return by 10am but we do now offer the option of an early 10am collection or late 3pm return. See our Rates page for costs.
What if there is a problem? We realise your holiday is very important to you and in the unlikely event of you having a problem we would always do our best to get you back on the road.
For mechanical issues or punctures during your rental we have 24 hour breakdown assistance, or for issues with the motorhome operation you need to contact us so that we can either talk you through how to fix an issue or try to locate a local motorhome repair service near where you are that you could visit. We do operate on out of hours helpline for when our office is closed.
Because of our size we are able to keep a motorhome in reserve for in case of emergencies. This means if there was a serious issue that could not be fixed we would try and swap you over to another vehicle so that you could continue enjoying your holiday.
Can I go abroad? Unfortunately our motorhomes and campervans can only be used in the UK including any islands. We do not allow them and they are not insured to go to Southern Ireland or mainland Europe.
Whats days can I pick up and drop off? We are open 7 days a week and so you can collect and return any day. Although returns can be made when we are closed we strongly recommend coming back when we are open so that the vehicle can be inspected while you are there as you are liable for any damage up until that point.
How many long do I need to rent for? In most months we have a minimum 3 day hire period which can start any day of the week. In July and August it is a minimum 7 days.
Can I have extra drivers? Yes extra drivers can be added for a fixed £30 each. They do need to slo be there when collecting the vehcile and have their licence and ID with them. The same licence requirements apply to them as with the main driver.
Do you have automatics? Yes most of our Groups of motorhome/campervan have vehicles that are automatic. They can be booked for a supplement fo £5 per day.
What is the difference between a campervan and motorhome? A motorhome is a purpose-built mobile home while a campervan is a van converted into a mobile living space. This means that motorhomes offer a larger space that's perfect for families, whilst a campervan is more for couples and its smaller dimensions make it more manoeuvrable.
Will I get a good quality vehicle? You can get the best quality motorhome or campervan by going to a trusted motorhome hire company. At Struans Leisure, we offer top quality, modern vehicles for hire for a fantastic price, and form respected manufacters including Adria, Elddis, Sun Living and Joa-Camp.Our team will be on-hand to help and guide you through every part of your motorhome travel journey.

The main thing you need to be aware of is the lack of rear visibility. However, you can manage this with the help of larger wing mirrors and our vehicles generally have reversing cameras.
Can you drive the North Coast 500 in a motorhome? Yes this is the most popular route for our customers and driving it in a motorhome or campervan is the nbest way to discover some of Scotland's hidden gems.
